CONSTRUCTING IDENTITY: An Exploration of Self Through Wearable Sculpture

This project sets out to offer GLBTQ youth the ability to gain confidence through the creation of characters and costumes that are based in their own expression of identity. It is a collaborative effort between artist Scott Andrew and the GLCC's existing Friday night youth Drop-In and PERSAD sponsored After-School programs. These programs currently support a range of 20 to 40 youth each week who are assisted through an entirely volunteer staff. The proposed Constructing Identity project will involve the creation of costumes and wearable sculptures that will be created by GLBTQ teenagers ranging from 13 to 17 years old, who currently attend programs at the GLCC. The project will also be advertised in local school systems and throughout the GLCC network and will be open to youth who have not previously attended the GLCC.

The proposed project involves a summer-long series of workshops in material processes and concepts in character and costume creation... more info athttp://www.makeshop.pghvoicesofyouth.org/node/118

sensory memory is a tricky thing...

Had a weird thing happen today.

I was talking to my mother ( thats how a lot of weird always starts *L*) and she was referencing a man I met when I was 4 or 5 . According to my mother, I was still young enough to be sleeping on the family dog Bernie....a great big black furball of a dog...I haven't thought about that dog in years. She mentioned the mans name and at first I didn't remember him and then as she is talking..off on another tangent about something unrelated...my nose was filled with the sudden smell of car grease, dirt, sweat and horse shit...it was the oddest thing...and I repeated the sudden random smells that struck me to my mother ' did D always smell like....' ..and she laughed and said this man always smelled bad... and that he always smelled of those things....he worked on cars a lot and was always out with my grandpop in the fields with the horses... Its funny that his name didn't ring a bell at first but somewhere it triggered my sensory memory of him..as soon as I smelled those things... I remembered seeing him...big as a the doorway, blocking the sunlight into the house.... and to me at the time he looked 10' tall...scruffy beard, dirty face, big smile, huuuugue hands and dirty overalls, dusty, dirty black/brown shoes that my mom would yell about tracking 'horse mud' all over the house...

This strikes me as odd that this memory of this random man came back to me as if i JUST saw/smelled him...it was a tad overwhelming...sensory memory is a tricky thing...

wow Its been a minute...

I apparently had a draft in here from a post I was going to make last may about life and last years Pride ...that was trippy.  I intend on using this again as I've definitely been more in a writing mood. To say that a lot has happened since my last entry would be an egregious understatement. There was good, very good and bad and just plain fucked up, I've met folks, missed folks, hurt folks, been hurt, loved and lost..just as Im sure everyone else has......but still I survive and the sun still shines ....so overall...things are alright:)

For now, Im going to post some blogs and things that I write and or contribute too..but more actual journal entries are to come for those that may be interested in reading:)

Aspartame - a substance commonly found in diet soda and other low sugar no sugar items for both diabetics and dieters a like..is a silent and sweet poisonous killer.

I am telling all who will listen..stop drinking and eating things that contain this chemical.  If you want something sugar free or you want a sugar substitute- try Stevia- It's a little more expensive but it is not made from chemicals that can cause damage ranging from mood disorders, brain dysfunction and even death.

More info below from the following website- http://www.dorway.com/badnews.txt
( Need mroe info- google it- judge for yourself)

The fact remains, though, that MOST victims don't have a clue that aspartame may be the cause of their many problems! Many reactions to aspartame were very serious including seizures and death.

Those reactions included:

Abdominal Pain
Anxiety attacks
Asthmatic Reactions
Bloating, Edema (Fluid Retention)
Blood Sugar Control Problems (Hypoglycemia or Hyperglycemia)
Brain Cancer (Pre-approval studies in animals)
